University of Iowa partners with Alternative Reproductive Resources To Launch New Gestational Surrogacy Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Iowa City, IA (July 21, 2009) – The Center for Advanced Reproductive Care at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City is launching a new gestational surrogacy program with Chicago-based Alternative Reproductive Resources (ARR), a leading recruiter of egg donors and gestational surrogates.

With only two IVF centers in Iowa, the addition of a gestational surrogacy program in June at the state’s only comprehensive academic medical center is expected to significantly expand assisted reproductive healthcare services in Iowa and across the surrounding region.

“We found an increasing number of patients asking if we had a gestational surrogacy program,” said Ginny Ryan, M.D., University of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care. “Adding a gestational surrogacy program was the missing link to some of our infertility treatment options, so we are very excited about this additional service.”

The UI Center for Advanced Reproductive Care will oversee the program and focus on the medical screening and treatment of all parties. ARR will manage the logistics of the treatment process, which includes recruiting gestational carriers, matching carriers with intended parents, health and psychological evaluations, legal and financial services, and supporting carriers and intended parents throughout the process and pregnancy.
“We are looking forward to working with the center and helping it build its capabilities and reputation,” says Robin von Halle, president of ARR. “We hope our surrogacy expertise will help the residents of Iowa and nearby states create the families they desire.”

The center chose ARR because of its reputation for ethical and professional services, and for its adherence to standards and guidelines of the American Society for Reproductive Resources (ASRM).

“We look forward to referring both intended parents and interested gestational carriers to ARR, and anticipate receiving referrals of interested patients from ARR as well,” says Ryan.

Established in 1987, the Center for Advanced Reproductive Care was Iowa's first In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) program. It brings together board-certified reproductive endocrinologists, urologists, nurse specialists, embryologists, and andrologists who offer a full range of state-of-the-art treatment options. The center offers counseling services and connections to area support groups and is recognized as a national leader for elective single embryo transfers that contribute to health and safety of mother and child. A Parent’s Story:
Cheryl Johnson, Willowbrook, Ill.

I always wanted children, but as I grew older I knew the chances of becoming pregnant would become harder. ARR had the philosophy I was looking for in an agency. The ARR team made me feel very comfortable as a single woman making a life-changing decision. I also was impressed by ARR’s egg donor process. ARR did extensive background work as part of the process, ultimately matching me with two exceptional potential donors. They both shared my characteristics and values. I am now the proud mother of twin boys. My donor and ARR helped me create the family I always wanted.
